The real problem is that slot machines simply don’t have a strategy. This means that not one player has an advantage over the others. This doesn’t seem very American.
To be honest, it seems more like socialism. You can study a machine for hours, days, weeks, or years and not benefit from a drunk walking into the machine, successfully shoving some money in and pulling the handle (or pressing a button). There is no disrespect for other countries or political systems, but here in America, we value hard work (please, no politics!) And skill.
So, it looks like video poker is a perfect fit. It offers players who choose to study strategy the opportunity to achieve the highest possible returns. There are other games in the casino that offer strategies for players so that good players can do better than bad. However, some of these games offer returns that are routinely over 99% and in some cases OVER 100%.
Ultimate Texas Hold’em offers returns as high as 99.7% (and possibly higher) if you can play on your computer. However, the average human playing in a casino cannot come close to that. Video poker strategy is complicated, but nothing compared to UTH. In this case, the ability to obtain high returns is much more attainable. So, we have games that reward good players over bad and which give good players a realistic chance of winning in the short term. In case the game pays more than 100%, it is even possible to win in the long run. It looks like an American dream! Hard work is rewarded!
I’m not sure there is an organization that can actually name video poker the American National Game of Chance, but I will continue to nominate it here in my column. If you agree with me, I suggest the next time you go to the casino you play video poker. If you don’t know the right strategy, I’d like to recommend my dad’s first full length book on the topic, which consists of several dozen of his finest columns on video pencetpoker.
